- Abstract
This paper reports the case of giant inflammatory polyposis submitted to surgical procedure for suspected sigmoid colon cancer. This entity is a rare manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease and is associated in two thirds of cases to Crohn's disease. It is believed to come from the conregeneration of the mucosa in a state of recurrent inflammatory processes after remission. Nevertheless, this inflammatory polyposis growth becomes giant on extraordinary occasions, taking various forms such as a consolidated mass or pasty worm and is denominated localized inflammatory intestinal polyposis. The clinical manifestations are similar to that of any inflammatory bowel disease and may present with symptoms arising from polypoid masses of the colon. The recommended treatment is the complete colonic resection with histopathological study to rule out malignancy in the colon. The literature review of recent knowledge about this disease allows the internist to take this into account in order to diagnose it with opportunity.
