PRIVILEGED CITIZENS AND THE RIGHT TO RIOT: A REPLY TO PASTERNAK.
- Authors
Carnes, Thomas
- Abstract
The article "Privileged Citizens and the Right to Riot: A Reply to Pasternak" by Thomas Carnes explores the concept of political rioting and its justification. The author agrees with Avia Pasternak's conclusion that political rioting can be justified, but disagrees with the restriction that only genuinely oppressed citizens may participate. Carnes argues that privileged citizens should also be allowed to riot, as their inclusion would enhance the effectiveness of justified riots. The article delves into the definition of political rioting, the conditions imposed on rioters, and the success and necessity conditions for justifiable rioting. Carnes suggests that allowing privileged citizens to participate in riots alongside oppressed citizens can increase the likelihood of achieving policy changes and addressing the injustices that the riots aim to address. The author also draws a connection between political rioting and civil disobedience, highlighting their shared commitment to demanding just social conditions.
