- Abstract
The article discusses the effects of visibility on dialogue and performance in a cooperative problem solving task. A study was conducted on the effects of visibility on interaction. The results show that communication between pairs of subjects who could see each other while performing the map task was more efficient than that between pairs of subjects who could not see each other. The analysis of task performance, showing no difference in performance between visibility and no-visibility pairs, was consistent with previous studies, which showed that the quality of solution in a problem solving task is not affected by restricting the number of channels available. The results establish that the visibility of one's conversational partner improves information transfer and the management of turn taking in a transactional problem solving task.
