- Abstract
The article discusses the career of Australian labor leader John Barnes Nicholson (1840-1919), who served as the New South Wales Labour parliamentarian for Illawarra from 1891 to 1917. His background as a miner and eventually union leader of the Illawarra Miners' Association is discussed, as is his election to the state Legislative Assembly. His independent political positions and consequent drop in popularity among his miner constituents is discussed, as is his eventual switch to the Nationalist Party and his fall from office.
