- Abstract
The article explores the intellectual approach concerning the use of chemical substances such as opium, hashish, and boza in the Ottoman Empire. It provides an essential data on such chemical substances and discusses the text found in a scrapbook preserved in the manuscript collection of the University Library of Leiden as Cod.Or. 25.721. The discourse between the protagonists and antagonists concerning the suitability of the use of stimulating and intoxicating substances is elaborated. Through the arguments being laid, it is averred that the origin of such substances adds to the suspension of disbelief.
