- Abstract
The article discusses the influence of late medieval and early modern hymns by the Bohemian Brethren on the German-language hymnology of the Moravian Church that evolved from the 18th century onward. The author provides a brief history of Moravian hymnals from the 16th to the 18th century and then examines which hymns originally composed in Bohemia were known by 18th-century Moravians headquartered in Herrnhut, Germany. He presents a survey of Moravian hymn writers, including Anna Nitschmann, Petrus Herbert, and Christian David, and their representation in various hymnal editions until the 20th century. He also suggests that the prevalence of certain hymns at certain times is indicative of changing religious tastes.
