- Abstract
The article focuses on origins of defence counsel's inclusion in felony trials by surveying the major scholarship in the history of legal representation by criminal defendants in Victoria. It mentions history of public provision of defence counsel to impoverished accused and continuing relevance given the current trend towards cuts in legal aid funding. It also mentions changing rates of use of defence lawyers in the criminal trial with improving access to equal justice.
