- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents an anthropological study of the Straits Chinese in Singapore. Their socio-political developments in Singapore were observed to be correlating with its shift in ideological orientation. Their powerful position in the community was highly affected by the interaction of Chinese immigrant settlers in the country that caused the corruption of their status and special positions in the Singaporean society. However, this group were relevant contributors to the country's economy as they were comprised mostly of Chinese merchants engaging in the transportation of Chinese manufactured goods in the Malayan west coast and Straits Settlements.
