- Abstract
The article examines how law and justice are tackled in the play "El alcalde de Zalamea," by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Topics covered include the play's depiction of a father-daughter relationship and a military captain's abusive actions against a peasant woman, Calderón de la Barca's comments on the inefficiencies of the Spanish legal system as well as on the distinction between personal vengeance and public justice, and violent confrontations between soldiers and peasants.
