- Title
THE HOMOLOGOUS SAPHENOUS VEIN IN ARTERIAL RECONSTRUCTION.
- Authors
Jackson, David R.; Abel, Donald W.
- Abstract
In this paper 8 more have been added to the 54 reconstructions utilizing the homologous saphenous vein that have been reported in the literature. 15 showed short term patency only. The remainder have stayed patent from 5 months up to 4 1/2 years. Since these grafts have in most cases been utilized in end stage, severely compromised reconstructible situations (such as prior autologous graft failure) there is certainly a place for them in the vascular surgeon's armamentarium since rejection and dilatation do not appear to be factors in their survival. Long term follow up in more satisfactory reconstructible situations is needed for proper assessment of their true longevity. The use of fresh frozen stripped veins verses living, dissected-out ones seems to have no bearing on their longevity. Some authors feel ABO compatibility may enhance the graft's survival time.
