LOS VOLCANES SAGRADOS EN EL FOLCLORE Y LA ARQUEOLOGIA DE COSTA RICA.
- Authors
Ceruti, María Constanza
- Abstract
The volcanic landscape of Costa Rica is deeply intertwined with the Precolumbian Past and modern Folklore, playing a prominent role in the cultural heritage of Central America. The main archaeological sites in the area are located at the foot of active volcanoes; as it is the case with the monumental ruins of Guayabo -located at the foot of volcano Turrialba- or the petroglyph fields near volcano Orosi. Indigenous folklore portrays active volcanoes such as Poás, Irazú and Arenal as tutelary entities and dwelling places of deities, linking them to natural catastrophes, shamanic rituals and ancient human sacrifices. Whereas criollo folklore connects local mountains to enchanted caves, hidden treasures, ghosts and witches.
