- Abstract
This study examines the practices adopted by teachers of French as a second language (L2) when working with adult immigrants in the province of Quebec concerning the usage of the learners' first languages. The potential for using the various languages known by the learners within a multilingual context remains relatively unstudied. We were interested in the quantity and function of mother tongues (L1) in L2 classrooms and the development of bilingual activities. Classroom observations and interviews with teachers enabled us to note the format, function and decisional factors underlying the interlanguage references made by these teachers. The goal of the study is to identify the type of pedagogical support they would need to enhance this aspect of their teaching. Our study shows that the observed teachers recognize the value of interlanguage references and use them mainly for lexical translations, phonetic comparisons and to tease learners. However, their language pedagogy, which is mostly spontaneous, is rarely included in their preparation. In conclusion, we reflect on possible pedagogical approaches that the teachers could follow to better take advantage of the different languages used by their multilingual, adult learners in order to help their learning of an L2.
