- Abstract
The article presents the author's response to the criticism of his review of a book on savings bank life insurance (SBLI) by Gordon Leavitt. To stand outside the ambit of commercial rivalry and indulge a curiosity about the checkered course of business history is a prerogative and perhaps even a duty of the ivory tower analyst. It is understandable that persons not so privileged may discover condescension in disinterested comment whenever, as interpreted by them, it does not seem to be entirely favorable to a particular vested position. While SBLI's right to adapt to changing economic conditions has never been challenged by this reviewer, he is nevertheless interested in the gratuitous explanation that most Americans now consider themselves as belonging to the middle class and in the further and correlative comment that industrial business is being phased out. For the phasing out of the industrial business certain reservations should be made. First, the phase-out is not everywhere uniform. Second, many companies are still aggressively in the industrial business. Third, an important distinction must be drawn between industrial policies and debit marketing. Fourth, the scope of debit operations as a whole is increasing, not decreasing. Fifth, not all debit sales are reported under industrial sales.
