- Abstract
The article presents a study which developed an original method for the assessment of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) swelling in Temple-sur-Lot Dam in Southwest France. The evaluation of the conventional residual expansion tests showed that it is not a viable method for measuring AAR swelling in concrete dam structures. The conventional method failed due to the incompatibility between gels and accelerated tests, and presence of large aggregates in core samples. The study proposed an original method that would assess AAR kinetics and residual swelling with the use of laboratory tests of silica consumption kinetics and finite element (FE) inverse analysis. The method proved to be effective in measuring swelling amplitude and could be used as prediction model for future displacements.
