- Abstract
An examination of the various ways in which Bach assimilated elements of the French organ tradition demonstrates the extent to which his French-inspired music, specifically the Pièce d'Orgue, exhibits these elements. An analysis of these French traits reveals several specific performance implications that are different from those commonly held by modern organists. First, BWV 572 is modeled formally and stylistically after the petits and grands pleins jeux of the French tradition, as well as the point d'orgue of Grigny. Harmonically and contrapuntally, BWV 572 also owes much to the stile di durezze e ligature, a primary characteristic of the plein jeu. The sophisticated counterpoint in the middle section further indicates that Bach incorrectly assumed the German and French principal choruses to sound similar. Finally, taking into account the piece's French influence, a stylistic analysis of BWV 572 reveals that Bach intended the middle section of the piece to be performed entirely manualiter until the pedal point at the end of the section.
