- Title
On translating Salvador Espriu's verse.
- Authors
Rodrigues, Louis J.
- Abstract
This article presents tips on translating the poems of Salvador Espriu. Espriu's work has distinct traces of the literary style of T. S. Eliot. In translating Espriu's verse, the translator has to understand the author's background first before he attempts to understand his poetry. If there is any single overbearing influence to be observed in Espriu's poetry and drama, it is that of the Bible. Furthermore, in producing a faithful rendering of the poet's works, the potential translator must work with the bewildering array of Espriu's accomplishments and knowledge of other languages and literatures for a background.
