The article examines severe domestic squalor and the need for appropriate intervention. It explores the habit of hoarding as one of the traits that people living in squalor have which is also said to be a manifestation of a mental illness like dementia, schizophrenia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. It also presents the report of Sutherland and Macfarlane regarding the ethical issues involved in addressing severe domestic squalor.
