- Title
Soft materials: Marginal matters.
- Authors
Vitelli, Vincenzo; van Hecke, Martin
- Abstract
The authors discuss the study by D. Bi and colleagues on soft materials, such as sands. The authors says that the study, published in December 15, 2011 issue of the journal "Nature," shows that collections of loose, unjammed discs become rigid when sheared under constant volume, building up pressure and resisting further deformation. Moreover, there is an in-between region for the fragile and shear-jammed states, which should meet near the marginal or jamming point to overcome rigidity.
