- Authors
Everist, Mark
- Abstract
The article explores the popularity and significance of the "JUPITER" ensemble, which consisted of arrangements of symphonies, concertos, and overtures composed in Vienna during the early 19th century. These arrangements allowed British audiences to access the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and others. The text discusses the conventions and practices of arrangement during this time period, highlighting the unique status of the JUPITER arrangements in British musical culture. It also examines the use of obbligato and ad libitum in these arrangements, provides examples of different arrangements, and analyzes the challenges faced by arrangers. The article emphasizes the provincial context of these arrangements and their continued use well into the second half of the nineteenth century. It also explores the relationship between the original compositions and the arrangements, challenging traditional notions of the original and the arrangement.
