- Abstract
In order to study the influence of roots on the cracking and strength of expansive soil under drying-wetting cycle conditions? the root system of bermudagrass was mixed with expansive soil at the mixing rate of 0. 0. 06%? 0. 14% and 0. 22% to prepare samples. Through indoor experiment and computer image processing technology? the effect and mechanism of root improvement of expansive soil was quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the degree of crack development increases with the increase of the number of drying-wetting cycles. The third drying-wetting cycle has the most significant impact on the cracking of the mixed root specimen. The higher the content of roots in the soil? the lower the degree of development of the soil fissure network. The shear strength of the soil decreases with the increase of the number of drying-wetting cycles. The higher the root mixing rate of the soil? the smaller the decrease in the strength index during multiple drying-wetting cycles. After six drying and wetting cycles? the cohesive force and internal friction angle of the sample with a rooting rate of 0. 22% are 51. 59 kPa and 8. 25° larger than those of the plain soil sample. The root system and soil particles are entangled and connected? which effectively inhibit the development of cracks and significantly maintain the soil's integrity. The research results can provide references for improving the properties of expansive soil and promoting and applying ecological protection of expansive soil slopes.
