Packaging design is a marketing tool that protects the product from external factors with an ergonomic structure that facilitates transportation, communicating quietly with the consumer. Designers have verged into new form and content search in order to highlight and differentiate packaging designs in the competitive market which can be defined as clothes of the products. As a result of this search, cultural elements have been turned into a design language; a rich variety and interpretation has been put into use in graphic design and packaging design. Culture and cultural elements, as in many fields, are the source of nutrition that the designer uses during the production process. The purpose of this study is to examine how cultural elements are used in packaging design as a symbolic language. The study is a descriptive research within the scope of the survey research model. It is limited with Portuguese culture, where cultural values are symbolized and used widely in a wide variety of packaging designs. In this context, within the framework of visits to Lisbon and Porto cities, symbolic value of Portugal's cultural elements were examined through observation and literature; reflections on the packaging designs are handled through the examples.
