- Authors
VARGA, DONNA; ZUK, RHODA
- Abstract
The article critiques children's illustrated stories depicting golliwogs and teddy bears from the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries. It examines how golliwogs represented racist caricatures of people of African descent. The authors also explore the themes of white childhood innocence and adult nostalgia. Books considered include "Dottie's Big Bath, or The Sea Side," by Richard André and "The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a 'Golliwogg,'" by Florence and Bertha Upton.
