- Title
The Battle for Pacifica.
- Authors
Stern, Marc J.
- Abstract
The article examines issues surrounding the future of the Pacifica Radio Network and its cultural significance for community radio and media in the U.S. The combat over control of American mass media is one of long-standing and enormous passion. In June 2003, for example, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) altered its regulations concerning broadcast television. The commission's ruling allowed media corporations to own stations that reach up to forty-five percent of the viewing public, to possess both newspapers and television stations in the same city, and to own multiple stations in large markets as improving the quantity and quality of news available to the public.
