- Title
`Diotrephes does not receive us': The lexicographical and social context of 3 John 9-10.
- Authors
Mitchell, Margaret M.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the translation of the Bible's 3rd letter of John, verses 9 and 10, with particular attention paid to the Greek verb ἐπιδέχσθαι, "to receive." The author focuses on the nature of the conflict between figure called "the elder" and the biblical figure Diotrephes in light of lexicographical history and the passage's social context. Parallel Greek language is analyzed in Greek historian Polybius's works, as well as the Bible's 1 Maccabees.
