- Abstract
The year in which this journal issue is published marks the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. This was a terrible and world changing conflict, in which a young generation faced unimaginable suffering. The author of this article writes from his own experience as an Army Chaplain, about the Free Church chaplains who accompanied the armed services. In an age when most people professed a faith, the work of chaplains was dangerous, essential and highly valued. Denominational allegiance was important, and the article begins from the necessity of providing Free Church as well as Anglican chaplains. But it also describes the breaking of denominational barriers, as circumstances called for greater openness.
