- Abstract
The article discusses the first observations of soil temperatures on needle ice formation in the sub-Antarctic. It relates the events happened on December 3, 2008 and December 9, 2008 which showed that needle ice formed when the night-time temperature gradient between soil and air was weak. The observations suggested that the maritime sub-Antarctic environment do not follow the traditional estimations on ice nucleation temperatures.
