- Title
Editorial: Pay to criticise? Rebuttal articles in open-access journals should be published for free.
- Authors
Montesinos, Daniel
- Abstract
The editorial discusses the issue of fee-waiving policies for critical comments and rebuttal articles in open-access journals. While open access has brought positive changes to the editorial world, there are still challenges to be addressed. Many open-access publishers do not explicitly waive fees for critical comments or rebuttals, which disincentivizes authors from publishing these types of contributions. The article highlights a specific case where authors were asked to pay a fee for a rebuttal article that disproved a flawed publication. The editorial argues for the establishment of an ethical commitment to waive fees for critical comments and rebuttals in reputable open-access journals to encourage scientific progress and maintain credibility.
