- Abstract
The article discusses the use of motherly language and images of God as mother by Christian theologians, pastors and thinkers during the period from the writing of the New Testament to 1400 AD. Topics addressed include conceiving the Spirit of God as motherly by early Syriac Christians, the emergence of the claim that God is sui generis or beyond gender, motherly talk of God in the Bible, and ways in which Christianity portrays each person of the Trinity as being like a mother.
