- Abstract
The article discusses the economic conditions of Mormon leader Joseph Smith and financial disaster occurring after the wreck of the steamboat Nauvoo. The author reflects on U.S. government loans to Mormons used to finance steamboats and the inability of the Mormons to repay debt following the wreck. The article explores default judgments and bankruptcy claims filed by Smith and the resultant foreclosure on town lots and outlying parcels of church land in Nauvoo, Illinois. Other topics include transfer of deeds, writs of extradition, and navigation of rivers such as the Des Moines.
