- Abstract
An essay is presented on the influence of Western empires on human subjecthood since 1800, highlighting the relationship between animals and humans and the concept of race. It examines the assemblage of race wherein animals and humans cohabitate, the changes in racial knowledge about animals and humans, and the lion ancestry of Sri Lankans. Also discussed are the material entanglements in the concept of race, animal phrenology, and human and animal science.
