- Abstract
The article presents information on a study which examined the egg-laying sites of Bufo bufo or the common toad and monitored their reproduction in naturalized clay pits. Observations revealed a large failure in the reproductive success of B. bufo in the area and that clutches affected by the pathogen Saprolegnia presented black and white coloration of eggs during the first stages. Egg mortality were related to climate-induced reductions in water depth at oviposition sites. The study found that the hatching success of B. bufo is generally lower for ultraviolet (UV)-B exposed eggs compared to those shielded from UV-B.
