- Abstract
The following text is part of a wider investigation on the presence of the body in the discursivity of the Uruguayan university tradition. History shows the presence of positivism, empiricism and pragmatism in the issue of the body, related to teaching and research done in the University of the Republic (UdelaR) in the 1900s. From that moment, a fundamental institutional key is identified: the creation of the Medicine College in 1876 and the group of laboratories created by that impulse. However, there were objectives that went beyond those laboratories; this is how many prized notions for politics were raised; where social medicine plays an important role. In this scenario, science and government of the body will dialogue about society's health as a governmental concern that has a pedagogic anchor: the knowledge of medicine, mostly practical, experimental, are translated into the imperative of education of the body and gymnastic exercise.
