An omen of things to come: the Goldwater Campaign, American Conservatism and the ‘Special Relationship’.

- Abstract
Conservatism in the USA has been the subject of much recent historical study, but rarely have scholars looked to how foreign observers viewed the rise of this political movement from the mid-1950s. Focussing on a specific group of observers – British diplomats – this article examines how conservative Republican senator Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign was viewed from abroad. Already prone to viewing the USA in a condescending light, Britain's diplomats reserved a particular level of opprobrium for Goldwater, a man who challenged conventional ideas about foreign and domestic policy and who seemed to threaten the Anglo-American ‘special relationship’.
