- Abstract
This article aims to discuss the pressure caused by military recruitment, especially during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870) on local protection networks. It is known that there was a tacit agreement between the parties involved on who should be responsible for the military. However, with the growing demand for more recruits, there was an increasing interference by the Brazilian imperial state in local affairs, particularly in the political clienteles, whose protective networks were under pressure. Chiefs and authorities of the localities, especially the superior commanders of the National Guard, had the capacity to protect their clientele and, above all, their prestige was put in check. Therefore, we will analyze a particular case that occurred in Uberaba as an example of these pressures in favor of military recruitment.
