The article examines the influence of the one-armed enslaved man named Squire, who acquired the fictitious name Bras Coupé, on U.S. literature and collective memory. Topics covered include the use of accounts on Squire my slaves and enslavers to perpetuate U.S. anxieties of African American empowerment following his death in 1837 and Squire's relevance in the twenty-first century.
