- Abstract
The article examines psychiatric diagnoses and the relationship between biology and culture in the practice of psychiatry at the Georgia State Sanitarium at Milledgeville, Georgia during the early 20th century. Particular focus is given to to the case of the pseudonymous Mary Roberts, an inmate diagnosed with manic depression. Details on her psychomotor activity and hallucinations are presented. Topics discussed include racism, grief, and African-American spirituality.
