- Title
Rhenium net-shape parts made by laser-assisted shaping.
- Abstract
The article reports that near-net-shape parts are made of rhenium alloys by a laser-assisted manufacturing (LAM) process, reports Rhenium Alloys Inc., Elyria, Ohio. LAM is a very precise way of producing complex shapes, with an order of magnitude reduction in waste. Near-net-shape fabrication avoids problems associated with bonding and welding separate components and it promises rocket and jet engine components with lighter weight and reduced cost. The company has also developed a method for alloying rhenium and tungsten to provide material with superior overall thermal resistance and mechanical properties.
