- Title
Lid hygiene – Why and how.
- Authors
Messmer, Elisabeth M.
- Abstract
Lid hygiene—including hot compresses and lid massage—remains one of the basic principles in the treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Lid hygiene can soften the meibum and facilitate its release from the meibomian glands. Patients with MGD regularly performing lid hygiene may experience partial or complete improvements of symptoms. However, only about 55% of patients typically comply with the recommended procedure. Therefore, professional lid hygiene executed by the ophthalmologist including microblepharoexfoliation, lid warming and expression of meibomian glands with forceps and/or automated thermodynamic therapy may assist patient and doctor in their common effort to treat MGD.
