- Title
Northern Ireland, the BBC, and Censorship in Thatcher's Britain. By Robert Savage.
- Authors
Doughty, Roseanna
- Abstract
Most notably, Jean Seaton has explored the motivations behind, and the immediate impact of the broadcasting ban, demonstrating how the BBC resisted the imposition of direct censorship in 1988 (Seaton, 2012). Savage recognizes that the BBC was not a single unified voice and that resistance to government pressure often varied greatly within the Corporation's hierarchy. Yet, he argues, broadcasters still provided critical reporting, which not only addressed the violence perpetrated by the IRA and other paramilitary organizations but raised serious questions about the British government and security forces' actions regarding Northern Ireland.
