- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus type 1 is a chronic health condition that develops most often in children and adolescents. People with diabetes need help from family members to carry out control and monitoring of treatment. This study aimed to assess the experience of parents of diabetic children and adolescents in relation to feeding their children. This is a qualitative study conducted through semi-structured in Guarapuava/PR. Survey participants were seventeen parents with children with diabetes mellitus type 1, all enrolled in the program and Hiperdia receiving insulin through the Unifi ed Health System The key questions were: "How is your day in relation to disease and feeding your son? "," After the discovery of the disease was no change in their experiences with their children? "and" What do you think about nutritional therapy for your son? ". The results of this study revealed the change in family dynamics after the diagnosis of disease was observed through the reports that the biggest diffi culty is in relation to food and that there are changes in eating habits of the whole family. Parents reported not feeling prepared to deal and live with the disease. Given the results emphasize the importance of health professionals know the experiences of parents regarding feeding their children so they can help in nutritional therapy.
