- Abstract
The article presents a profile of the African American Captain Michael A. Healy, officer in the U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service and frontier traveler in Alaska. A biographical profile of Healy is given, describing his personality and career, highlighting his involvement in a voyage in the Arctic Ocean in 1889. Comments are given describing Healy's alleged reputation as a harsh officer and frequent drunk, providing accounts both affirming and rejecting the accusations. Accounts are provided of several of his subsequent voyages in the early 1890s and the investigations brought against him for his conduct.
