- Authors
Bright, A.; Johnson, E. A.
- Abstract
The article focuses on an investigation into the prevalence of smothering in commercial free-range laying hens. The investigation included 10 producers from The Lakes Free Range Egg Company and Noble Foods, who were interviewed from April to July 2010. It found that there are three categories of smother, namely panic, nest box and creeping/recurring. It also noted the relevance of the behavior of hens in commercial flocks to the identification of the causes of smothering.
