A literary criticism of the late nineteenth century New Woman novels "The Story of an African Farm" by Olive Schreiner and "A Yellow Aster" by Kathleen Mannington Caffyn is presented, focusing on the theme of religious doubt. It comments on aspects of feminism, freethought, and sexual subjectivity. The author also considers colonial perspectives in the novels.
