Adapting an epidemiological model for studying the spread of viral infections, we use agent-based modeling (ABM) to simulate how misinformation spreads in different network types. Our results indicate policies that address misinformation after the fact, such as fact-checking or labeling fake news, will not be as useful as policies promoting increased media literacy or other preemptive measures.
