- Abstract
The Lithuanian trade unions have not received a considerable attention of Lithuanian and foreign scholars and, therefore, there is a lack of scientific exploration of this issue: the data on trade membership, activities, the structure of sector and the main problems are very scarce. While describing the trade unions in different countries, the aspects of sector's structure that reflect the distribution and organization of trade unions have been often taken into consideration. The structure is being analyzed by evaluating the relative values in the total quantity with the calculation of centralization, concentration and fragmentation indexes. The indexes calculated indicate that the Lithuanian trade union sector is characterized by obvious decentralization, the concentration among the national trade unions is high, and so the competition is not strong. However, the evaluation of approximate relative segment of independent trade unions reveals the concentration index that implies the growth of competition. The absolute inner competition is characteristic for the biggest Lithuanian trade union that unites two-thirds of employees in trade union national centres. This situation, most probably, is not favorable for the trade union's image as centralized power in negotiation with other participants of industrial relations (IR).
