- Abstract
A letter to the editor discusses a retrospective study on the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) values and mortality in pediatric trauma cases. The authors argue that the standardization of MPV measurements has not been achieved, and therefore, MPV values should not be used to diagnose or determine prognosis. Factors such as the time between blood collection and MPV measurement, the type of anticoagulant used, and the devices used to measure MPV can affect the results. The study's reliance on data from different centers and the lack of a healthy control group also raise concerns about the reliability of the findings. Therefore, the authors conclude that MPV values may not be a marker of mortality in patients with severe trauma.
