- Abstract
Few tāne | men work in whakaora ngangahau | occupational therapy in Aotearoa New Zealand or internationally. Likewise, little attention has been given to the recruitment of tāne ākonga | male students and those from diverse backgrounds. This qualitative-based project was designed to explore this topic from the perspective of tāne ākonga | male students. Prior contact with kaiwhakaora ngangahau | occupational therapists, working with people, and job variety/availability were identified as recruitment factors. Retention approaches suggested by ākonga | students included tāne | male role modelling and support from other tāne ākonga | male students. This research offers insights into strategies supporting the recruitment and retention of tāne | men and increasing diversity within the profession.
