- Abstract
This section presents news briefs on the textile industry as of December 2004. China National Textile and Apparel Council and its affiliate, China Textile Network Co. Ltd., announced the formation of a joint venture with CNTextile LLC in an exclusive agreement to conduct U.S. sourcing with Chinese factories when quotas expire for textile related products made in China. The joint venture, CNTextile JV, will provide e-market trading and training services to the Chinese fashion industry and a portal for purchases by producers in China from U.S. suppliers. Meanwhile, Unifi Inc. announced it will shut down two production lines and downsize its Kinston, North Carolina facility. The company currently operates four production lines and expects to close one line in December 2004 and a second line by the end of March 2005. In other news, Young scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and from top European universities attended a workshop in Ludwigshafen at BASF's invitation. The company offered the participants a program of lectures, plant tours, and management training on theme of Nanotechnology--A Challenge for the Chemical Industry. The workshop is intended as a means of forging closer ties with the young scientists emerging from this university.
