- Abstract
In the article "Music, Politics and Society in Ancient Rome" by Harry Morgan, the author challenges the belief that Roman music was solely influenced by Greek and Etruscan music. Instead, Morgan argues that Greek music had a significant impact on Roman music, as musicians from the Greek East flocked to Rome during the expansion of the empire. The author also explores the connection between music and politics in ancient Rome, discussing how music was used to entertain and manipulate the Roman audience. Additionally, the article examines the association between Roman emperors, such as Augustus and Nero, and music, highlighting their self-identification with Apollo and their use of music for self-promotion. Overall, the article aims to integrate music into the broader understanding of Roman social and political history.
