- Abstract
Per Dahl's book, "Modes of Communication in Stravinsky's Works: Sign and Expression," explores the challenge of understanding composer Igor Stravinsky, who did not always practice what he preached in his music. Dahl constructs a theory of communication for Stravinsky's music based on notated signs in the scores and performed expression in the composer's recordings. He analyzes the ways in which these signs and expressions communicate and shape the more conventional elements of melody, harmony, form, and orchestration in Stravinsky's works. Dahl's approach offers new perspectives on interpretation and performance practice, uncovering modes of communication that have been overlooked or discouraged by Stravinsky's aesthetic propaganda.
